What does April mean in Coachella Valley? Music and more music! Every weekend in April is a music festival featuring different genres. Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival is the most popular and is happening now. But, a smaller, 2-day, annual event, Garden Jam Festival opened music month the first weekend of April. It was held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, an intimate and beautiful setting.
Friday night’s headliner was Lukas Nelson and his band Promise of the Real. Lukas is the son of famous country singer Willie Nelson. He brings his own brand of rock, blues and country music style, along with some influences from his dad. Lukas is a rising star! He and his band were featured in the recent remake of “A Star Is Born” as Bradley Cooper’s band. Four years ago I saw him with Neil Young at the epic event, Desert Trip, with 75,000 other people! We were so lucky to have Lukas back in the desert at an up-close-and-personal setting. Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real were awesome!
Saturday’s headliner was Buddy Guy and he blew me away. For an 82 year old, he still has lots of blues in him and based on the crowd’s reaction, he was the festival favorite. During the middle of his set, he walked off stage and into the crowd playing his music. I followed him like a crazy fan! It was amazing and so much fun.
Before the sunset, I saw someone who looked like ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons standing near the stage. Sure enough, it was him. I was able to get closer and snap a photo. I was hoping that he was going on stage with Jimmie Vaughan, who was the second act. When that didn’t happen, I knew he was going on with Buddy Guy. But no such luck. Though his presence at the concert will remain a mystery, it just shows there’s always the potential for cool surprises during music month!
It’s on to the next festival. One more weekend of Coachella, and then Stagecoach wraps up the month. I appreciate that Garden Jam Festival Opened Music Month again this year, and hope they get a good line up for next year. In the meantime, if you want to have your own desert home so you enjoy all that desert has to offer, please contact me. I’m a big fan of Coachella Valley!
